| "Irish" is a 5-year-old intact male who is diabetic and has cataracts on both eyes. He has limited eyesight at this time. He was surrendered by his owner to the Nevada Humane Society in Reno because they could no longer afford his insulin treatment.
"Irish" is a beautiful, sweet, gentle and affectionate boy. He is being fostered by Dr. Pat Coletti, a pediatrician in Reno, who currently has his insulin under control. According to Dr. Colette "He is undoubtedly the best tempered setter I have the pleasure to know, and I have fostered and raised dozens. His health right now is good and the diabetes is under control."
"Irish" is very friendly to people and other dogs, and would like to chase cats if he could see them. He is house trained and sits, lies down, and shakes on command, so there has been some training. He is leash trained and walks like a show dog with that typical "prance".
"Irish" underwent cataract surgery on both eyes in late September. According to the ophthalmologist his vision is now 80%-85% of normal. Since his eye surgery he has been running around the house and yard like a puppy. We expect his vision will increase as he continues to recover from the recent surgery. Once he has fully recovered from the eye surgery "Irish" will be neutered and ready to find his "forever" home.
Due to his diabetes he will require life-long care and management of his diabetes. This will involve insulin injections, a low glycemic meat and kibble diet and at least a two mile walk every day. He will need a loving home that is committed to caring for him and managing his diabetes throughout his years.
