The Mission Behind Breed Rescue
Breed-specific rescue began, as so much rescue does, out of need. Even the most beloved dogs sometimes lose their homes through no fault of their own, and Irish Setters — with their energy and grooming needs — are no exception. Volunteers across the country saw these gentle, red-headed dogs in shelters and surrender situations and resolved to do something about it. The result is a network of dedicated people working to find every setter a place to truly belong.
Powered by Volunteers
Rescue is volunteer work in the truest sense. The people who make it possible donate their time, their energy, and often their own resources to care for dogs in need. They transport dogs between shelters and foster homes, open their homes as foster families, provide care and basic training, and help match each dog with the right adopter. It is hard work, frequently unglamorous, and profoundly meaningful — and it is sustained entirely by people who simply love the breed.
A Nationwide Network
No single rescue can do it all, which is why breed rescues cooperate across regions. When a dog needs help in one area, rescues elsewhere often step in — sharing transport, foster space, and adopter networks. Animal shelters and humane societies are essential partners, too; many work closely with breed rescues to place purebred dogs into homes that understand the breed's particular needs. Organizations like the Irish Setter Club of America help connect this national community of breed enthusiasts and rescuers.
Why Irish Setters?
Anyone who has loved an Irish Setter understands the devotion behind breed rescue. These are dogs of remarkable warmth and personality — athletic, intelligent, playful, and deeply bonded to their people. They reward an active, engaged home with boundless affection and good humor. The volunteers who champion the breed do so because they know exactly how much joy a setter can bring to the right family, and how much these dogs have to give when someone gives them a chance.
Preserving the Mission
This site stands as a tribute to that work and as a practical resource for anyone drawn to the breed. Whether you are considering adoption, learning about the Irish Setter for the first time, or simply love these gentle, red-headed friends, we hope you find here a faithful reflection of what breed rescue is all about: compassion, commitment, and the unshakable belief that every dog deserves a forever home.
